Not all natural stone is safe for fire pit construction. The key distinction is between igneous and sedimentary rocks: igneous rocks (granite, basalt) are formed under high heat and handle thermal cycling well, while sedimentary rocks (limestone, travertine, sandstone) contain water and air pockets that expand and crack — or in rare cases spatter — when heated rapidly.
Granite is the premium choice for fire pit ring construction. Dense, low-porosity, and formed under volcanic conditions, granite handles repeated heating and cooling without cracking or spalling. Available in grey, black, buff, and multicolored varieties. Works beautifully as a fire pit ring, seating ledge cap, and surrounding patio material. Cost: $8–$18 per square foot for material. Long-term durability: 30+ years with no maintenance required on the stone itself.
Basalt is a dense volcanic rock similar in heat resistance to granite, with a uniform dark grey-to-black color that becomes even more dramatic when fire-lit at night. Available in tumbled, honed, and cut-face finishes. Basalt's dark color absorbs and retains heat longer than lighter stones, which can make adjacent seating uncomfortable in summer. Excellent for fire pit rings in fire features used primarily in cooler months. Cost: $10–$22 per square foot.
The interior of any wood-burning fire pit should be lined with true firebrick (refractory brick) rated for sustained temperatures of 2,000–2,300°F. Standard natural stone — even granite — should not be used for the interior burn chamber walls. Firebrick is inexpensive ($1.50–$4 per brick), available at masonry suppliers, and is mortared with refractory mortar (not standard mortar, which cracks under heat). The firebrick liner protects the outer stone ring and extends the life of the entire structure.
Limestone and travertine: Both are calcium carbonate sedimentary rocks that can crack, flake, or calcine under intense heat. Do not use on fire pit interiors. Can be used for surrounding patio areas that are not directly adjacent to the firebox.
Sandstone: High water absorption; rapid heating causes cracking and potential explosive spalling.
River rock: Beautiful but extremely dangerous in fire pits — the rounded shape traps water inside, which becomes steam under heat and causes explosive shattering.
Fire pit design must balance aesthetics with function, safety clearances, and how many people you want seated around the fire simultaneously. Standard dimensions are well-established — deviating significantly from them produces a fire pit that either doesn’t draw air well (too large) or is too dangerous to sit around comfortably (too small).
Interior diameter: 36–44 inches — the most common size for residential Los Angeles patios. Large enough for a full fire, small enough to maintain conversation across the fire.
Wall height: 12–18 inches above grade — enough to contain embers while allowing good visibility of the flame.
Wall thickness: 8–12 inches for structural integrity.
Seating distance: Chairs should be 5–7 feet from the fire pit edge for comfortable seating without excessive heat.
Square fire pits (36x36 to 48x48 inches interior) are popular with contemporary landscape designs and coordinate naturally with rectangular patios and seating arrangements. The corners of square fire pits accumulate ash and require slightly more maintenance to clean. Rectangular fire pits (often 36x60 inches or larger) suit long seating arrangements but require careful airflow design to burn evenly from end to end. Both shapes work well with granite cap stones for a clean, modern aesthetic.
Wood-burning: More authentic experience, lower upfront cost ($2,500–$5,000), no gas infrastructure required. Requires ash cleanup after each use, subject to SCAQMD burn restrictions on Spare the Air days, not permitted in some high-fire-risk zones in LA County.
Propane/natural gas: No ash cleanup, no burn restrictions, instant on/off. Higher upfront cost ($3,500–$8,000+ with gas line). Propane requires tank storage; natural gas requires a dedicated gas line from the house (add $500–$2,000 for gas line). Gas fire pits are currently the most popular choice on new Tegula Stone projects in LA.
A seating ledge — a wide cap stone surrounding the fire pit at seat height (16–18 inches from grade) — integrates seating into the fire pit structure, eliminating the need for separate chairs. The seating ledge is typically 14–18 inches wide, capped with flat-cut granite or bluestone, and may be backfilled with gravel or concrete internally. Adding a seating ledge increases the total footprint of the structure to 8–12 feet in diameter and adds approximately $1,000–$3,000 to the project cost.
A permanent stone fire pit requires a concrete foundation that extends below Los Angeles’s frost depth (minimal, but thermal movement is still a concern) and provides a stable, level platform that won’t shift under the combined weight of stone and repeated heating cycles. Skipping proper base preparation is the primary cause of stone fire pits that crack or shift within 5 years.
Excavate the fire pit footprint to 12–18 inches below grade. Fill with 6 inches of compacted crushed gravel (3/4-inch base rock) to ensure drainage — standing water under a concrete slab causes freeze-thaw expansion damage in colder climates and erosion in Southern California’s clay soils. Compact the gravel with a plate compactor before pouring concrete.
Pour a concrete footing minimum 6 inches thick for small fire pits (36–44 inch interior diameter) and 8–10 inches for larger structures. Use a minimum 3,000 PSI concrete mix. The footing should extend 6 inches beyond the outer perimeter of the fire pit ring. Allow 48 hours curing time before beginning stone work. In LA’s climate, concrete typically reaches adequate working strength within 3 days for project continuation.
Fire pits collect rainwater. Every permanent fire pit should include at least one 2-inch drainage hole in the floor, covered with a heavy-gauge stainless grate or drain cover, directing water to gravel fill below. Without drainage, the fire chamber fills with water during LA’s winter rains, accelerating firebrick degradation and causing ash to become a cement-like paste that is difficult to clean. A simple perforated pipe running from the fire pit floor to a drainage point 4+ feet away solves this problem permanently.
All structural stone-to-stone joints in a permanent fire pit are mortared, not dry-set. Use Type S mortar (higher strength and weather resistance than Type N) for the outer granite or basalt ring. Use refractory mortar specifically formulated for high-temperature applications for all firebrick interior joints — standard mortar fails at sustained temperatures above 400°F, which any active fire pit easily exceeds. Apply mortar in 3/8-inch joints for granite block; 1/4-inch joints for firebrick.
Building a permanent fire pit in Los Angeles without understanding local fire codes is the most common mistake homeowners make. LA has specific rules from multiple agencies — LADBS for structural permits, LAFD for fire safety, and SCAQMD for air quality compliance. Non-compliant fire pits can result in mandatory removal.
Any permanently constructed outdoor fire feature in the City of Los Angeles typically requires a building permit from LADBS. The permit application requires a plot plan showing the fire pit location relative to property lines and structures. Fees range from $200–$600 for a standard residential fire pit. In unincorporated LA County, different rules apply — contact the County Public Works department. The Los Angeles Fire Department requires all outdoor fire features to maintain minimum clearances:

In Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZs), which cover significant portions of the LA hillsides, additional restrictions apply and some types of open fire features may be prohibited entirely. Check your property’s VHFHSZ status at the LA Fire Department website before planning.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) issues Spare the Air alerts on days of high air pollution — typically 5–15 days per year in LA. On Spare the Air days, wood-burning outdoor fire pits are prohibited. Gas fire pits (propane or natural gas) are exempt from burn restrictions. SCAQMD violations carry fines of $1,000–$10,000 per occurrence. If you plan to use your fire pit frequently in fall and winter, a gas fire pit is the more practical choice for compliance.
Many LA neighborhood HOAs have additional restrictions on fire pits beyond city codes — including prohibitions on wood-burning, height restrictions, or required aesthetic compatibility reviews.
