The concrete surface must be clean, porous, and free of contaminants before mortar is applied.
For slabs with hairline cracks, a crack isolation membrane (a flexible polymer mat) is sometimes applied before the mortar bed. This membrane allows the concrete to move slightly (hairline cracks can open and close with temperature changes) without transmitting that movement directly to the stone above. This adds $1.50–$3/sqft to project cost but significantly extends the overlay's crack-free lifespan.
Polymer-modified mortar (also called thin-set mortar, though a thicker "medium-bed mortar" is often preferred for stone overlay) is applied to the concrete surface in sections.
