Engineered specifically for irregular flagstone and natural stone joints ranging from 1.5–4 inches wide. Contains larger aggregate than standard polymeric sand. Ultra-fine, very dry sand often sold in bags at home improvement stores. Washes out quickly in rain or irrigation, allows weed growth, and does not harden. Acceptable only for temporary installations or very protected indoor stone tile work. Not appropriate for outdoor natural stone patios or driveways in Los Angeles.
A popular choice for wide natural flagstone joints in Southern California. Compacts well, allows drainage, and has a natural earthy appearance. Does not harden like polymeric sand, so weeds and ants can still penetrate over time. Best used in combination with stabilized DG or topped with polymeric sand to resist weed germination. Popular for rustic, garden-style flagstone patios.
Living plants (baby tears, creeping thyme, Irish moss) planted in wide joints between flagstones. Beautiful aesthetic for garden patios. Requires occasional weeding and watering; plants will die in heavy foot traffic areas. Not suitable for driveways or high-use patios. Best in garden settings with minimal foot traffic and regular irrigation.
Used only in mortar-set (wet-set) installations over a concrete base. Rigid grout joints in dry-lay applications crack as the stone field moves seasonally. Correct polymeric sand application is critical — common mistakes (applying on damp stone, using too much water) cause haze, joint erosion, or product failure. Follow this sequence exactly for professional results.
Joints must be clean and dry before applying polymeric sand. Remove all existing joint material, organic debris, and loose sand. Blow out joints with a leaf blower if available. The paver surface must be completely dry — do not apply polymeric sand if rain is forecast within 24 hours, if the pavers are wet from irrigation, or if overnight temperatures will drop below 32°F. In Los Angeles, mornings in summer (after any dew has dried) are ideal.
Pour polymeric sand onto the paver surface and use a push broom to sweep it diagonally across the joints, working it into every gap. Fill joints to within 1/8–1/4 inch of the paver surface — not flush with the top edge. After sweeping in the sand, compact the entire surface with a plate compactor (place cardboard or a rubber pad under the compactor plate to protect the stone surface). Compaction drives sand deeper into the joint and removes air voids.
After compaction, sweep all excess polymeric sand completely off the paver surfaces with a push broom or leaf blower. Any polymeric sand left on the stone surface when water is applied will haze or bond to the stone, which is very difficult to remove. Take your time on this step — a thorough cleaning before wetting is far easier than removing polymeric haze after the fact.
Using a garden hose with a fine mist setting (not a jet), gently wet the entire paver surface until the sand in the joints is thoroughly saturated — approximately 15–20 seconds per 10 sqft. Watch for the joints to darken as the sand absorbs water. Do not use a high-pressure spray, which can displace sand from the joints. Allow 5 minutes, then mist again if any joints appear dry. Do not allow water to pond on the surface.
Keep the surface dry for 24 hours after final wetting to allow the polymer binder to set. In Los Angeles's summer heat, full cure typically occurs within 12–18 hours. Avoid foot traffic and vehicle traffic for 24 hours. After cure, the joint sand should feel firm and resist dislodging when touched. Light foot traffic can resume at 24 hours; vehicle traffic at 48–72 hours for driveway applications.
After polymeric sand has fully cured (48–72 hours minimum), apply a penetrating impregnating sealer to the entire paver surface. Sealing after joint sand installation — not before — is the correct sequence. Sealer applied over fresh polymeric sand locks in the joint surface and significantly extends the life of both the sand and the stone. When polymeric sand fails, it almost always traces to one of a few application mistakes. Here is how to identify and fix the most common problems.
Caused by excess sand left on the stone before wetting, or wetting while sand was still on the surface. Remove haze by scrubbing with an acid-based paver cleaner (phosphoric or muriatic acid diluted 10:1 with water) and rinsing. For persistent haze, a professional efflorescence remover works well. Two causes: (1) sand was not fully activated — not enough water applied, or wetting was interrupted before full saturation; (2) sand was applied over damp pavers, preventing proper bonding. Fix: remove remaining sand, dry completely (wait 48+ hours after rain), and reapply following application steps exactly. In LA, this is most common after early-morning applications when overnight marine layer leaves pavers slightly damp.
Argentine ants — extremely common in Los Angeles — can excavate polymeric sand joints even after full cure if the binder is aging (5+ years) or was not fully activated. Solution: clean out ant activity, apply a perimeter ant barrier around the patio, and refresh joints with new polymeric sand. Some LA homeowners add diatomaceous earth beneath the sand setting bed as an additional ant deterrent before installation.
Weeds in polymeric sand joints indicate degraded or improperly installed joint material. The most likely cause is under-activation (not enough water) or an aging joint that has lost binder strength. Remove weeds at the root (do not spray herbicide directly on joint sand — it degrades the binder). Refresh with new polymeric sand and ensure full activation.
