Travertine pool coping should be sealed every 1–2 years in Los Angeles using a penetrating silane-siloxane sealer — never a topical film-forming product, which peels under pool conditions. The most common mistake is sealing over residue from pool water chemistry or applying sealer to stone that is dry on the surface but still wet internally, which causes the sealer to fail within weeks.

Pool coping faces a combination of stresses that no other part of a home's stone hardscape endures simultaneously: constant water exposure from the pool, aggressive pool water chemistry (chlorine or salt), intense UV radiation, the mechanical stress of people sitting and stepping on the coping edge, and in LA, significant day-night temperature swings that drive expansion-contraction cycles in the stone.
Travertine is a popular choice for pool coping in Los Angeles for good reasons: its natural texture provides excellent barefoot grip when dry (unlike polished stone), its open-cell structure keeps it cooler underfoot than dense stone in direct sun, and its warm ivory and walnut tones complement the blue-green of pool water beautifully. But those same open cells — travertine's characteristic holes from gas bubbles trapped during formation — are highly vulnerable to pool water penetration if the sealing program is neglected.
Pool water chemistry is particularly damaging to unsealed or under-sealed travertine. Chlorine at pool concentrations (1–3 ppm) is aggressive toward calcium carbonate minerals in travertine, gradually dissolving the stone surface and weakening mortar joints. Salt chlorination systems (typical in LA pools installed since 2010) generate hypochlorous acid directly in the water, which is similarly corrosive to travertine over time. The sealer creates a chemical barrier that prevents pool water from making sustained contact with the travertine's mineral structure — when that barrier fails, deterioration begins.
The sealing process has six steps. Skipping or rushing any of them — especially the dry time verification — is the most common cause of sealer failure and premature reapplication.
Before cleaning or sealing, lower the pool water 6–12 inches below the coping line. This prevents pool water from wicking onto the stone during the process and ensures the underside of the coping is accessible for cleaning. Do not skip this step — applying sealer to coping while the pool is at normal level often results in incomplete coverage of the bottom inch of the coping edge, which is where water penetration begins. Run the pool pump on the waste setting or use a submersible pump to lower the level. Allow 2–4 hours to reach target level before starting.
Pool water leaves mineral deposits (calcium scale, white calcium carbonate crust) on travertine over time. These deposits must be fully removed before sealing — sealer applied over calcium scale will not bond to the travertine surface. Use a non-acid calcium remover product (acid removes calcium but also etches travertine) or a diluted phosphoric acid solution (5–10%) applied by a professional with appropriate PPE. Brush in small sections and rinse thoroughly. For light deposits, a calcium remover spray left for 5 minutes before scrubbing is sufficient. For heavy scaling (white crust visible across multiple copings), professional descaling is recommended before sealing.
After calcium removal, wash the entire coping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner to remove any remaining organic matter, algae, sunscreen residue, and cleaning product residue. Scrub with a medium-bristle brush and rinse with clean water. Do not use acid cleaners at this stage — the calcium removal step addressed mineral deposits, and additional acid use will begin etching the travertine surface itself. If the coping has significant algae or mold staining, apply a diluted oxygen bleach solution (non-chlorine) before the pH-neutral wash. Allow all cleaning residue to rinse completely before proceeding.
Travertine must be dry to depth — not just surface-dry — before sealing. The open-cell structure of travertine means it can appear dry on the surface while retaining significant moisture in the lower portion of the stone. Allow a minimum of 48 hours after cleaning before sealing; 72 hours is safer in the LA marine layer climate where morning dew keeps stone slightly moist. The plastic film test: tape a 12” square of clear plastic film to the coping using waterproof tape on all four edges. After 24 hours, check for condensation under the film. If condensation is present, the stone is not ready. Do not seal until this test passes.
Apply the first coat of penetrating silane-siloxane sealer using a low-pressure pump sprayer or a short-nap roller in even, thin strokes. Do not apply pooled or heavy coats — excess sealer sitting on the surface creates a topical residue that can yellow or leave a haze. Work in 4–6 foot sections, applying sealer and immediately back-brushing it into the travertine's open pores with a soft brush. After 20–30 minutes (the first coat is still slightly tacky), apply the second coat in the same manner. Two thin coats penetrate deeper than one heavy coat and provide significantly better protection. Wipe any sealer that migrates onto tile or plaster lines before it cures.
Allow the sealed coping to cure for at minimum 24 hours before any foot traffic, and 48–72 hours before refilling the pool. Sealer that contacts water before curing will not fully bond and will wash off prematurely. In LA's warm summer weather, 24-hour cure time for foot traffic is typically sufficient; during cooler winter months, allow the full 48 hours. Once the pool is refilled and brought back to normal chemistry levels, the sealed coping is fully protected. The first 30 days after sealing, avoid pressure washing the coping — allow the sealer to fully develop its chemical bond with the stone.
Not all sealers are appropriate for pool coping. The pool environment imposes specific requirements that eliminate many products that work well on standard patios.
A water-based silane-siloxane penetrating sealer with excellent chemical resistance to pool water chemistry. Rated for wet environments and chlorinated water exposure. Does not change the travertine's appearance (clear, natural finish). Available online and at professional stone suppliers. Coverage: approximately 100–150 sq ft per gallon on travertine. Reapply every 1–2 years at the pool edge; 2–3 years for pool deck areas farther from the water.
Specifically formulated for wet, high-moisture environments including pool copings, spa surrounds, and shower tile. Water-based penetrating formula with no-sheen natural finish. Widely available at tile and stone supply stores across Los Angeles. Dries quickly (2–4 hours to touch), allowing faster project completion. Excellent for DIY application due to low toxicity and clear water cleanup.
Acrylic, epoxy, and urethane film-forming sealers create a surface coating rather than penetrating the stone. Around pools, these coatings peel, bubble, and delaminate within 1–3 years due to constant water exposure and UV degradation. Peeling sealers are difficult and expensive to strip fully, and they trap moisture underneath that accelerates travertine deterioration. If your existing coping sealer is peeling or bubbling, it is a topical sealer that must be stripped before re-application of a proper penetrating product.
Sealers that enhance gloss or create a "wet look" on travertine are not appropriate for pool coping. Glossy surfaces become hazardous when wet — the pool coping edge, where people enter and exit the pool, requires maximum slip resistance, not enhanced visual gloss. Natural matte or satin penetrating sealers maintain or slightly improve the travertine's natural texture-based grip.
Salt chlorination systems (which convert salt to chlorine via electrolysis) are the majority of new pool installations in LA. Saltwater is generally gentler on skin and equipment than traditional chlorination, but it is more aggressive toward natural stone over time. For saltwater pools, seal annually without exception and conduct the water absorption test every 6 months. At the first sign of absorption under 30 seconds, reseal promptly — salt penetrating unsealed travertine begins causing pore crystallization and surface degradation quickly. Standard travertine pool coping often has its characteristic voids (the open-cell holes from formation) either left open (unfilled) or filled with grout during installation. Unfilled travertine around pools requires extra attention: pool water enters and stagnates in the open holes, promoting biological growth and salt crystallization. If you have unfilled travertine coping, apply two sealer coats specifically working the product into the open holes with a brush. For filled travertine, inspect grout fill condition annually — failed fill allows water intrusion at each hole.
