The driveway area is excavated 10–12 inches below finished grade to accommodate the base layers and cobblestone thickness. Proper slope (minimum 1.5% cross-slope) is established for water runoff. In Los Angeles, where clay subsoils are common, excavation depth may need to increase to reach stable soil. All organic material and soft spots are removed.
The native subgrade is compacted with a vibratory plate compactor or roller to minimum 95% compaction. In areas with very soft or expansive clay, a geotextile fabric layer may be installed to prevent base material from migrating into the subgrade over time. This step directly determines the long-term stability of the driveway.
A 6–8 inch layer of Class II aggregate base (3/4-inch crushed granite or equivalent) is spread and compacted in two 3–4 inch lifts. Each lift is compacted to 95% density before the next is added.
