Root-invasive weeds are much harder to remove than seed-germinated weeds — pulling the visible growth doesn’t remove the root network below. The traditional jointing material for natural stone patios is coarse sand or decomposed granite. Both are excellent seedbeds — loose, moisture-retentive, and nutrient-containing. • Install under the full gravel base, not just under the pavers — roots travel horizontally through gravel and emerge beyond the fabric if it’s placed too high

Use a Japanese weeder or crack weeder tool for deep-rooted weeds in narrow joints. Pull slowly and straight up to extract the full taproot — a snapped root regenerates. Boiling water poured directly into paver joints kills weeds on contact by denaturing plant proteins. It is 100% non-toxic, requires no protective equipment, and leaves no residue. Limitations: it also kills any beneficial ground covers or moss between pavers, it requires multiple treatments for deep-rooted perennial weeds, and it must be reapplied within days as new germination occurs. Most effective for annual weeds and seedlings. A kettle of boiling water treats approximately 20–30 linear feet of joints per application. Repeat every 2–3 weeks during peak growing season.
Horticultural vinegar (10–20% acetic acid) applied directly to weed foliage desiccates and kills most annual weeds. Standard 5% household white vinegar also works but requires more applications. Application: spray directly onto weed foliage on a sunny, windless day. Works best when temperatures exceed 70°F. Results visible within 24–48 hours. Multiple applications may be needed for perennial weeds. Vinegar does not kill roots — perennial weeds will regrow from established root systems. Safe for natural stone surfaces when rinsed promptly.
Glyphosate (Roundup) and other contact or systemic post-emergent herbicides effectively kill established weeds including deep-rooted perennials when applied to foliage. Apply when weeds are actively growing (spring and early summer in LA). Follow label instructions for target weeds. Systemic herbicides (glyphosate) travel from leaves to roots, killing the entire plant including root system — more effective than contact-only products for perennial weeds. Allow 7–14 days for complete kill before removing dead plant material and re-filling joints. Natural stone surfaces: rinse promptly after any herbicide application to prevent staining.
