The trench base provides a level, stable starting point and buries the first course of stone partially underground for additional stability. Level the trench bottom with a hand tamper. Add 3–4 inches of compacted crushed gravel to the trench base for drainage before setting your first stone course.
Select the largest, flattest stones for the base course — these carry the weight of every stone above them and anchor the wall. Set them in the gravel-filled trench with the flattest face up. Arrange stones so that vertical joints between stones are offset (staggered) from those above — this is called “breaking the joint” and is critical to wall stability. Tamp each stone firmly down into the gravel. Check for level across the entire base course — a level base course makes every subsequent course easier to set.
Set each successive course approximately 1 inch back from the course below (the batter rule). Stagger vertical joints between each course. Use chinking stones (small flat pieces) to fill gaps between large stones and stabilize any stones that rock. Re-seat any problem stones by lifting and adjusting the base material beneath.
