Step 1: Excavate the Site

Each step above the first must overlap the one below by at least 2 inches — this "nosing" prevents water from running between steps and gives the staircase visual continuity.
- Backfill behind the bottom step with compacted gravel before setting the second step
- Set each tread on its own compacted gravel base and bedding layer
- Ensure each rise is consistent (same height) — inconsistent rises cause trips
Step 5: Fill Joints and Final Check
Once all steps are set, fill gaps between stones with stone dust, coarse sand, or polymeric sand. Polymeric sand hardens when wet and resists weed growth and insect intrusion.
